102 years ago, a volunteer was born.

Meet Fred. He has been volunteering in his West Vancouver community for over 75 years.
For over three quarters of a century, he’s been rewarded with smiles and appreciation from his community peers and has even been awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.

From an early age, his mother instilled in him the importance of giving back to the community, something he’s carried with him for nearly a century.

At 102 years young, Fred is still as committed to volunteering as ever. Five days a week to be exact. In fact, he says his least favourite days of the week are Saturday and Sunday when he doesn’t go in.

“When he’s here, there is an uplift in the office,” says Jill Lawlor, the West Vancouver Senior’s Activity Centre Recreation Manager. “People are inspired to see that a man at 102… can contribute so much to the community.”
